Beyond Online Calculators

Use Your Own Metabolism as the Starting Point

Online formulas estimate calorie needs from population averages. RMR testing uses your breathing data to provide a more individualized resting-calorie baseline.

Prepare for a Reliable Baseline

Before Your RMR Test

Food, caffeine, exercise, and activity can affect resting metabolic rate. Follow these steps unless your care team gives you different instructions.

Fast for four hours

Avoid meals and caloric drinks during the four hours before your appointment. Water is okay.

Do not exercise that day

Exercise can temporarily raise energy use and affect your resting measurement.

Avoid caffeine and stimulants

Avoid caffeine for at least four hours. If you can do so safely, avoid nicotine, tobacco, and other stimulants on the day of testing.

Arrive ready to rest

Plan to sit or recline comfortably and relax quietly before and during the test.

Breathe normally during testing

Keep a light seal around the mouthpiece so all exhaled air reaches the device.

Keep repeat tests consistent

When possible, test at a similar time and under similar conditions for better comparisons.

Please contact our team before testing if you use supplemental oxygen or may have difficulty using a mouthpiece and nose clip. Do not change prescribed medication or oxygen use unless your clinician tells you to.
